Biostatistics Consulting Service

As part of their training all Master's degree students are required to spend one semester (2 hours a week) serving a Biostatistics Consulting Practicum and Doctoral Students are required to spend one semester. Students receive one academic credit for each semester.

In taking the Consulting Practicum the student will:

  1. Learn general strategies for approaching consulting problems that can be applied to a wide range of problems in the public health and medical areas.
  2. Develop the ability to interact with clients and elicit the information required to provide consulting expertise.
  3. Learn the role of the consulting statistician and the accompanying responsibilities and ethical considerations.
  4. Further develop expertise in selected areas frequently needed by the consulting biostatistician.

Each student taking the course spends two hours/week providing consultation to faculty and students in the Graduate School of Public Health and other schools in the Medical Center. Weekly sessions are held between the faculty instructor and all students taking the course to review and discuss the problems brought to the consulting service the previous week.
