Research Interests

Primary research interest is the design, implementation and analysis of clinical trials. Collaboration in clinical trials of the National Surgical Breast and Bowel Project (NSABP) has been a major focus dealing with trials involving the evaluation of therapies for the prevention or treatment of breast cancer. The development of statistical methodologies for cancer risk assessment and the risk-benefit assessment of therapies associated with multiple endpoints of potential benefit and harm has evolved from this collaboration. In addition to clinical trial interests, another area of interest has involved the treatment of those with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).  This research concerns the evaluation of methods to improve respiratory muscle function and to reduce hypoxic episodes during sleep. A third area of research interest has been the assessment of health effects from occupational and environmental exposures to airborne pollutants. This work deals with the study and long-term follow-up of large cohorts of individuals exposure to coal mine dust, nickel alloy dust, exhaust from diesel-fueled equipment, coke oven emissions generated during the procession of steel and emissions from coal-fired boilers used to produce electricity. The thrust of this effort has been to quantify risks from exposure and to evaluate pollution control methodologies to reduce exposure and the risks associated with exposure.
