| | Roger S. Day, ScD Research Associate Professor, Biostatistics & Center for Biomedical Informatics Education BA, Wesleyan University, 1972 MA, Wesleyan University, 1981 ScD, Harvard University, 1984 Research Fellowship, National Institute for Environmental Health Sciences, 1986 Research Interests I lead the Educational Resource for Tumor Heterogeneity, and continue the evolution of the Oncology Thinking Cap computer modeling facility, which uses stochastic models of tumor growth to help cancer researchers do thought experiments about cancer biology and treatment, and to help cancer educators develop their abilities to reason across the bridge from basic cancer science through implications for patients and clinical trials. We also develop knowledge management tools to help support a systematic process of model-building and validation. This work is only possible because of the strong contributions and support of a great team. I work with Stan Shackney to understand how disease-free survival curves can be used to shed light on the contentious dosing issues in adjuvant breast cancer treatment. We also work on the genetic evolution of breast cancers, through molecular studies of individual cells in tumor cell samples, and through modeling. Our long-range goal is to radically improve our ability to predict response of individual patients to a variety of cancer therapies and strategies. Together with my student Thomas Richards, I am developing "weakest link" statistical models that reflect more realistically the kinds of relationships that exist in the real world, especially in biology and medicine. We have found examples throughout cancer research of "interactions without main effects", and have developed methods for detecting them that are practical and more effective than the usual linear modeling.
