Statistical Genetics The Biostatistics Department has a long-standing interest in the area of statistical genetics dating to the time when C.C. Li, one of the founders of population genetics, was the chair of the department. At this time the Human Genetics Program and the Biostatistics Program were in the same department. Although the Human Genetics Program is now a separate department, the Biostatistics Program provides a mechanism whereby students with interest in statistical genetics may obtain their degree in biostatistics but write a dissertation in the area of statistical genetics. This is facilitated because statistical geneticists in the Human Genetics Program, Division of Statistical Genetics mentor doctoral dissertations for a limited number of students in the biostatistics program. Students in such a program take the usual requirements for a biostatistical major but their electives are appropriately selected courses in human genetics. In addition to filing their application with GSPH, students interested in majoring in statistical genetics as a specialty within the biostatistics program should contact Dr. Lisa Weissfeld the admissions chair for the Biostatistics Program and specify that they are interested in specializing in statistical genetics.
