In the 1990s the average number of graduates per year was 7. Currently, there are approximately 80 students in the department working towards a degree either part-time or full-time, and approximately 60% of these are doctoral students. The Department of Biostatistics attempts to maintain a balance between statistical theory and their application to real-world problems. An important part of the training of students is their interaction with faculty on research projects. Research training is often facilitated by a Graduate Student Research award (GSR) where a student while working for a degree works on a research project with a faculty member 20 hours a week. For working on the GSR the student receives a stipend, health coverage and a tuition waiver. There are approximately 30 students on GSR's in the Department of Biostatistics.

Student Professional Development

In addition to formal coursework there are a variety of activities that contribute to the student's professional development. These include experiences gained as a graduate student researcher, experience gained in the biostatistical consulting service, opportunities to collaborate with researchers in other disciplines, opportunities to travel and present at professional meetings and exposure to faculty and students in other statistical programs.

Considerable experience is gained by students as a Graduate Student Researcher (GSR). In addition to providing financial support and a tuition waiver for their coursework, a GSR provides the opportunity for students to collaborate with investigators in other research disciplines. During the past year the general areas of collaboration in which the GSR worked included cancer (5), occupational and environmental health (3), radiology (2), epidemiology (4), nursing (1), psychiatry (2), genetics (2), childhood disease (3), behavioral and social science (3), and transplant surgery (1).

GSR's work under faculty direction for 20 hours/week and sometimes make sufficient contributions to a project that they are included as co-authors on research publications. A partial list of recent collaborative publications in which GSR's have been included as co-authors is at the end of this section. Note that this list does not include the publications related to a student's dissertation.

Students are also encouraged to develop the skills necessary for effective oral presentation. Students have the opportunity to present in research working groups, department and school-wide seminars, and at professional meetings. Informal working groups are formed between students and interested faculty where current literature on selected topics is reviewed and potential methodological research topics are explored. Although these are generally informal and within small working groups, students often present for further discussion current papers from statistical journals.

Students have the opportunity for more formal presentations in a variety of settings. Each year the Dean sponsors a school-wide event where students present their research (both Master's and Doctoral). Both poster and oral presentations are given. From the group of presenters students are selected to present their findings at the annual meetings of the American Public Health Association. Additional presentations by students have been given at Pennsylvania Public Health Association Meetings, the Annual Meetings of Controlled Clinical Trials, and the Annual Banquet of the local chapter of the American Statistical Association.

Advanced doctoral students have the opportunity to present their research on the development of statistical methodology at the Eastern North American Region Meetings of the Biometrics Society (ENAR). The week before the meetings a Departmental Seminar is given where all students presenting at ENAR give a seminar to Biostatistics Faculty and students. A partial list of recent student presentations is given at the end of this section.

Additional opportunities for professional development are provided by the Seminar Series, conducted by the Department of Biostatistics. Seminar speakers include presenters from Pittsburgh as well as statisticians from other universities. A partial list of seminar speakers the last two years is given in the  Course Offering section under BIOST 2025: Biostatistics Seminar under seminars.

In addition, the statistics departments at Carnegie Mellon University and University of Pittsburgh Faculty of Arts and Sciences have seminar series that students can attend.

The annual meeting of the Pittsburgh Chapter of the American Statistician Association provides additional opportunities for interaction between faculty and students from different academic statistical programs in Pittsburgh as well as statisticians from local industry. Each year the local chapter gives a "Student of the Year Award" to the outstanding student from each of the three local academic programs.
